Choosing a unique URL, or domain name

In choosing your domain name you want to make a choice that is easily remembered and makes sense to your users. For instance, www.abc.com might be about books, or early education, or any number of subjects. The name www.xjk417.biz makes no sense to anyone except perhaps its creator. Of course, if your business or organization has a name then you want to use that name if at all possible. For example www.ibm.com is intuitive and helps customers find this company on the Internet.

So once you have chosen a name, or two, you need to verify that it is unique, and then register it so it stays that way and no one else can use it. You do this through the use of two Websites. The first is Whois, and is accessible from a number of places. A Whois search gives information about the registrant of a choice such as www.campdavid.com. It also, of course tells you if your choice is not registered with anyone else yet. You can find the Whois function at http://www.networksolutions.com/. It is a choice on the menu along the very top right corner of the page. Try it for a couple of existing domains to see how it works, then try your choices.

After trying your choice of domain name (URL) and finding one that is available and will work for you, you must register it. This can be done with a number of different companies, but cost is about the same for all of them. A site that does this as cheaply as any and that we suggest using to register the domain name is 000Domains (http://resellers.000domains.com/). This step requires a credit card and is done immediately. A two year registration is suggested. The above steps can be done for you if desired, just contact us with your choices of domain names in order of preference.
